In 1997 I was the Admissions/Marketing Director for a 335 bed skilled nursing facility in Metro-Detroit. I had a corner office just inside the front doors of the facility with a window over looking the front foyer of the building where a huge sky dome allowed the sun to shine down on our entrance. I loved my job. I worked with a fantastic team of people who provided passionate care for our residents every day. I was able to spend hours with families and friends of loved ones seeking placement in a skilled nursing facility. I heard all of their stories. I got acquainted with them in a way that typical “sales” people never do. I learned what mom was like before her hospital stay. I heard stories about what she liked to do and how she liked to spend her time. I learned about the family and how they interacted and what was important to all of them as they sought to find moms new “home”, no matter how temporary it may be. It was during this time of my career that I realized how desperately I wanted to help people during these times of challenge.

I eventually left that job to raise a family and later, to continue my career in healthcare. I knew that I had found my career “home” in helping people during their healthcare journey. For twenty-two years I have been committed to that goal. I have since worked in primary care clinics, out-patient hospital departments, assisted and independent living communities, home health agencies and hospice agencies. I have had the privilege of working with some of the best physicians, nurses, nurses aids, dietary, laundry, and housekeeping staff you can imagine. I have had the opportunity to assist families and patients in finding peace in the most difficult of circumstances and been honored to be a part of their life journey.

After twenty-six years as a healthcare professional, I found that I was no longer enjoying my own journey. I found myself spending more time feeling useless and unable to help the people who needed me most; the patients and their families. My time was consumed with metrics and outcomes that revolved around my employer and I no longer had the time to spend with patients and families. I was conflicted daily as I was still seeing the need for my assistance and simply unable to provide adequately for the people I claimed to serve. I finally decided to “retire” from the daily administrative role and get back to helping the people who drew me into my career, to begin with; patients and their families.
